Cape May County is a peninsula located at the southernmost tip of New Jersey. It is bordered by the Atlantic Ocean on the east and the Delaware Bay on the south and west. It consists of barrier islands and shore communities, four large townships, each with small villages within its boundaries, and one independent towns The barrier islands are (from north to south): Ocean City, Strathmere/Sea Isle City, Stone Harbor/Avalon, Wildwoods, and Cape May. The four large townships are(from north to south): Upper Township, Dennis Township, Middle Township, and Lower Township. Woodbine is in between Dennis and Upper Townships and is it’s own municipality.

The barrier islands that stretch along eastern edge of the county form the from Cape May Point, Cape May, the Wildwoods, Stone Harbor, Avalon, Sea Isle City and Ocean City are primarily tourist resorts and generally do not have large year-round populations. Inland, Lower, Middle, Upper and Dennis townships and the Borough of Woodbine have larger year-round residents, but are also home to   many campgrounds an other tourist attractions.
