While much has changed since Henry Hudson first explored the area almost 400 years ago, Cape May still has much of natural beauty that Henry Hudson wrote about in his journals. There are beautiful oceans and bays along the barrier islands, and pristine wooded forests on the mainland. Cape May County is still one of the least densely populated counties in New Jersey, and its residents work hard to maintain the natural beauty and small town charm that sets it aside from the other counties and makes it a popular tourist attraction in the warmer months.
Andrea Lippi, a poet from Cape May County, wrote many poems about the beauty of the area. You will see many of his poems throughout the website that can be found in his book Passions of a Poet. Below is a poem that describes his feelings about the county.
An Ode to Cape May County
Gem of four rich seasons
Cape May County Great
Bordered on the bay and the ocean
In the beautiful Garden State
Settled by Henry Hudson
Founded by courageous men,
Mariners see your lighthouse
Time and time again
You're sure to find all beauty
Of land, the sea and sky
So cherish Cape May County
Where the friendly seabirds fly .
